Acumen’s Pet Idol Event a Real Hit in Peterlee
Pet owners from Peterlee lapped up the support, advice and fun on offer during Acumen’s Pet Idol competition that took place in Peterlee Town Centre recently, with hundreds of local people coming on board the Launch Pad bus.
For a full week in November, the bus was parked near the Peterlee Lodge Hotel with live animals aboard and experts from the Blue Cross, Durham Constabulary Dog Section, RSPCA and Paws and Claws who were on hand to offer tips on pet care, free neutering and micro chipping vouchers, poop scoops, advice on dog training and volunteering opportunities.
Acumen Development Trust also talked to many people about the skills they need to get jobs, how to access training, including animal related courses and self employment.
Linda Robinson from Acumen said: “Although many people who came aboard the bus came to talk to us about their animals, several people also decided, after talking to Acumen, to take up short courses to improve their skills and build their confidence.”
The week culminated with around 50 pet lovers entering their pets in a number of fun competitions including, Best Pet, Prettiest Bitch, Most Handsome Male Dog, Waggiest Tail and Shaggiest Dog.
The winner of Best Pet, who won a framed portrait of their pet donated by the Peterlee Mail, was a white terrier named Poppy from Peterlee.
Judge Andrew White from Launch Pad said: “There was strong competition from a high number of entries. Eventually Poppy was chosen because of her attractive markings, looks and demeanour. Her photograph attracted a number of comments throughout the week and the general consensus was that she was the cutest pooch we had seen.”
Also judging was Linda Bailey from Paws and Claws Pet Shop who added: “Poppy definitely had the cute factor.”
