Fact Sheet 4 - APPLICATION FORMS

Some employers ask you to complete an application form, before being offered the chance of an interview.

PREPARATION

Check all instructions carefully.  Photocopy the form if possible and practice on the rough copy first.

FILLING IT IN

Use black pen (as it's easier to photocopy) and complete the form clearly and neatly.  Try and keep the form clean and unfolded.

Follow instructions: when asked to fill something in BLOCK CAPITALS, do so.

Answer all the questions which apply to you, keeping your answers short and to the point.  Make sure you include any relevant experience and give examples when required.

Avoid short cuts like enclosing your CV and referring to it on the application form.  The employer wants to compare applications using the form.  Only enclose your CV with the completed form (not instead of) if the employer asks for it.

Try to avoid using words which might put an employer off, for example, sacked/dismissed.  You could say instead you left for personal reasons and leave explanations for the interview where your side of the story can be given.

Support your application with examples.  Explain how, when and where you have dealt with situations (if you need more space, attach a separate piece of paper, don't try and squash everything into the space provided).

WHEN IT'S FILLED IN

Check all answers carefully, making sure all dates agree, there are no spelling mistakes and that you have answered all the questions.

Make sure you have stated clearly which job you are applying for.

Use a large envelope - don't try and fit it in a small envelope as this will spoil its appearance.
