Alison’s New Shop is Blooming in Ashington

After being made unemployed from her role as Manageress at an Ashington Florists, Alison Slater, from Stakeford, Northumberland, was forced to assess her options for the future – and fast.  Fifteen weeks later, she has opened her own business ‘Alison’s Floral Designs’ and business is blooming.

Although Alison,43, had the experience and qualifications she needed to run a successful floristry, she needed support on the business side of things so she contacted Business Link and Wansbeck Works! (led by Acumen Development Trust).

Together they worked with Alison to develop a business plan and to secure funding to help get the business off the ground.  Wansbeck Works! also helped Alison to access a balloon modelling course which has enabled her business to expand and she now specialises in weddings, funerals and balloon design.

Terry Wright, Alison’s Employment Adviser at Wansbeck Works! said: “Although Alison did receive some negative feedback initially when she was researching her business idea and some people thought there were enough florists in Ashington, she was undeterred and even more determined to succeed.

“Alison is a really motivated, talented person and I am pleased we could support her while she set up her business.”

Of the support she has received, Alison said: “There is lots of support out there for new businesses but you need to do your research and get help from the beginning to make sure you give your business the best chance of success.”

Alison’s new shop had been really successful in the short time it has been open and she hopes to hire one or two local staff in the future as her business develops.
